Track promoter Al Franken brings suit against L.A. Coliseum Commission

(September 14, 2012) – Ever wonder what happened to the famed wooden indoor track that was used during the now-defunct Sunkist Indoor Games/Los Angeles Indoor Invitational at the Los Angeles Sports Arena?

Well, we found out. It’s not good news.

That track, which hosted many a world record back in its heydey during the 1970s and 80s, has since apparently hit the worst of times.

Here’s the legal papers filed on behalf of track and field meet promoter Al Franken:

Al Franken has the heart of a world champion. He helped me quite a bit when I covered the SIG/LAII track meet for the legendary Wave Newspapers. The Coliseum Commission is a mess.

its a shame a piece of history was lost in the track itself, my fond memories of the sunkist meet were an 8:19 -2 mile race victory by henry rono and sunkist workers throwing oranges up into the seating area. good luck mr frankin.

In my scrap book, I still have my pin on “numbers” as well as contestant ticket stubs from both the Sunkist and LA Times indoors…

What a shame it came to this. I remember running the 4X800 on that track. The event t-shirts were the coolest thing about it.
