California Region NXN Power Merge Scores

(November 24, 2012) – What a day for California cross country!  Conditions in Fresno's Woodward Park were ripe for fast times, and OH BOY did the athletes deliver!  Simi Valley's Sarah Baxter set the course on fire, screaming to a time of 16:39.7 over the rolling 5000 meter course and shattering a sixteen-years-standing record of 16:43 by Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa.  Setting  records is becoming a habit for the junior from Simi Valley, who recently blew away the Mt. SAC course record and gained national media attention.  Baxter's time today beat a staggering 61 percent of the boys field .  She would have been a team scorer on 89 of the 114 boys teams that competed!

Today was one for the record books, and they didn't stop with Baxter's incredible time.  The Saugus girls team became the first team in state meet history to seven-peat.  That's right, seven-peat!  These dominant women brought home yet another state title in Division II and earned themselves a place in state history as the most dominant girls program California has ever seen.  Not to be outdone, the San Francisco University girls team won their 10th (non-consecutive) team title in Division V competition.  This too is a state record, and is especially poignant as their beloved coach, Jim Tracy, is terminally ill with Lou Gehrig's disease.

Great Oak and St. Francis girls earned California's auto-bids to next weekend's Nike Cross Nationals (NXN).  In their efforts, St. Francis also set a Sac-Joaquin Section team-time course record of 92:40.  Arcadia and California (Whittier) earned the automatic NXN berths on the boys side.  This is Arcadia's fourth straight appearance at NXN, but a first for Tony DiMarco's California High School squad. Congratulations to all who qualified.

The Boys Division I and Division II individual titles were nail biters to the finish. In Division I, El Toro's Juan Gonzalez edged out Arcadia's Estevan De La Rosa by a mere tenth of a second and finished with the fastest time of the day.  They ran 15:04.8 and 15:04.9 respectively.  In Division II, Dos Pueblos' Bryan Fernandez raced to a win in 15:08.3, narrowly beating Saugus' A.J. Yarnall (15.09.7).
