(FRESNO, Calif.) — Seeking to continue an exciting new tradition of recent years, the seventh annual California State Indoor Meet, presented by VS Athletics, returns to Fresno's Save Mart Center on Monday, February 17th, 2014.
Taking place on the Presidents Day holiday, the indoor meet will serve as the culmination to a month-long series that includes 11 qualifier meets — all contested outdoors — with the first being the Westmont College All-Comers Meet on Saturday, January 18th.
Top placers at each of the 11 qualifier meets will automatically qualify for the Feb. 17th indoor state meet finale, with athletes also able to gain entry to the state meet by hitting the "at-large" qualifying standard set for each event.
The 2013 version of the indoor meet featured three meet records for the boys side of the competition and four new standards on the girls side.
In the boys meet, Central Valley talent Joe Herrera of Tulare Western blazed 1:14.61 to win the 600-yard dash in record time. Herrera, a senior this year, is expected to top the list of returnees in the event. In relays action, Redondo Union athletes combined to establish a new standard in the 4×800 relay, clocking 8:13.79 on the 160-yard oval. In field event action, James Logan High's Jeffrey Prothro set a new meet record in the triple jump with a spectacular mark of 49-07.00.
For the girls, Los Gatos high jumper Madeline Fagan captured center stage with a series of fine efforts in finally topping out at a pristine 5-10.00. In the shot put ring, La Sierra's Tanya Sapa gave a sneak peek of her fine outdoor season to come by winning the event in a meet record 48-03.75. On the track, La Quinta's Megan Huebner covered the mile in a new meet best 5:09.20 while Redondo Union athletes made it a sweep of the 4×800 relay records with their 9:45.69 performance.
